Mohan Rakesh’s play Halfway House (1968) boldly deals with a middle class family torn by changing values and economic insecurity in an independent India embracing modern philosophies like ‘Absurdism’ and ‘Existentialism’. Aadhe-adhure is the original Hindi title of the play which is more in sync with the mood of the play as in its depiction of interpersonal relationships and inability of the characters to express their thoughts and emotions emphatically. ‘Adhure’ means incomplete and ‘Aadhe’ means half. It is related to today’s ordinary class which is half and incomplete. It is the story of a middle-class family which is being pushed towards lower middle class existence by circumstances.
